Semi-Slav Defense

Overview

The Semi-Slav Defense combines the solidity of the Slav (...c6) with the flexibility of the Queen's Gambit Declined (...e6). Black builds a sturdy pawn triangle and aims to free the position with the central break ...c5 or ...e5, often after grabbing the c4-pawn with ...dxc4 and ...b5.

• The ...c6/...e6 pawn duo is extremely solid but temporarily boxes in the c8-bishop.
• In the Meran, Black snatches c4 and expands with ...b5, fighting for the initiative.

• Black's freeing break ...c5 (or ...e5) is the strategic goal of the whole system.

A favorite of Botvinnik, Anand, and Kramnik, the Semi-Slav produced some of the most complex theoretical battles of the 20th and 21st centuries, including pivotal games in several World Championship matches.
