1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6
The Philidor Defense (1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 d6) is a solid but somewhat passive opening where Black reinforces the e5-pawn with a pawn rather than a piece. While it restricts Black's dark-squared bishop, it creates a sturdy structure that is hard to break down.

Named after Francois-Andre Philidor, the greatest player of the 18th century who famously declared 'pawns are the soul of chess.' The defense was later revitalized by Nimzowitsch and used occasionally by Ivanchuk.
