The exchange sacrifice is a sophisticated tool used by strong players to alter the nature of the position. While a rook is generally worth about five points compared to three for a knight or bishop, there are many positions where a well-placed minor piece outperforms a rook, particularly in closed positions or when the minor piece occupies a dominant outpost.
Tigran Petrosian, the ninth World Champion, was famous for his exchange sacrifices, often surrendering the exchange for seemingly modest positional gains that would only bear fruit many moves later. His willingness to sacrifice material for long-term positional control inspired generations of players.
When considering an exchange sacrifice, evaluate what you receive in return: Does the minor piece occupy a dominant square? Does the sacrifice weaken the opponent's pawn structure? Does it accelerate an attack? Will the rook have open files, or will it be passive? If the answers favor the sacrifice, it may be stronger than maintaining material equality.
